What a tiling job includes

A proper bathroom tiling job is mostly preparation: removing old tiles, levelling walls and floor, and waterproofing the shower zone before a single new tile goes up. In Amsterdam's older housing stock the substrate is rarely straight, so levelling is usually quoted separately. Expect a full standard bathroom of six to eight square metres to take one to two weeks — demolition, drying times for screed and waterproofing, tiling, and grouting each need their own days and cannot be compressed without risking leaks later.

Choosing tiles and checking a quote

Large-format tiles look calm but cost more to lay because the substrate must be flatter; small mosaic costs more per metre in labour than the tile itself. When comparing quotes, check three lines: is demolition included, is waterproofing a named item with a brand, and who supplies the levelling compound. A quote that only lists "tiling per m²" will grow later. Order about ten percent extra tiles for cuts and future repairs — a discontinued series is impossible to match two years on.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a full bathroom take?
One to two weeks for six to eight square metres, drying times included.

Can new tiles go over old ones?
Sometimes on floors, almost never on walls in wet zones — waterproofing needs a stripped substrate.
