Walk-In Shower or Bath? What Actually Decides It in a Dutch Bathroom
In a typical Dutch bathroom, walk-in shower versus bath is decided less by taste than by two physical constraints: how much floor build-up you have for a drain body and its trap, and where the existing soil stack sits. A level-entry shower needs depth in the floor plus a continuous fall to the drain, and it pushes the waterproofed wet zone and the tiled surface outward. A bath contains its own wet zone, hides its trap inside its own height, and tolerates a longer waste run. Either option means opening the floor and re-tiling, so the decision lasts as long as the bathroom.
Floor build-up and the fall to the drain
A level-entry (drempelloos) shower puts the drain body and its trap inside the floor build-up. Measure the depth between finished floor level and the structural deck before any design decision.
Over a concrete slab the screed is often shallower than people assume, and in apartments it may also carry underfloor heating pipes, so cutting into it is frequently off the table. Wooden joist floors, common in older terraced houses and on upper storeys, are harder: notching joists to make room for a trap is a structural intervention. The usual answers are dropping the shower zone between joists, or raising the floor and accepting a step. Where depth is absent, the alternatives are a tray with a visible upstand, a raised tiled platform, or a wall gully that moves the trap into the wall cavity. A linear drain generally wants more depth than a point drain — settle drain type against available depth before anyone picks tiles.
The fall must be built into the screed, not improvised with tile adhesive. A fall bodged in adhesive reappears as standing water, lippage and failing grout. A bath is indifferent to all this: its trap sits under the tub.
Waterproofing and the size of the wet zone
Tiles and grout are not watertight. The waterproofing is a separate membrane or liquid-applied layer applied over the substrate before tiling, and it is what keeps water out of the floor. Failures happen at details, not in the open field: the floor-to-wall junction and internal corners, pipe and mixer penetrations, and the bond between drain flange and membrane.
A walk-in shower without a tray or enclosure throws splash and steam further than a bath does, so the membrane must extend well past the visible footprint. With a bath the tub contains most of the wet zone, so waterproofing concentrates on the surrounding walls, the rim junction, and — if a shower sits over the bath — the full splash height.
The soil pipe usually decides it
The stack position dictates where waste can go. A horizontal run needs its own gravity fall, and every extra metre eats height that competes with the shower's floor build-up. A floor-level drain starts low and has nothing to give away, so moving a walk-in shower far from the stack forces a raised floor with a step, a rerouted stack, or a waste pump — and a pump adds noise plus a maintenance point that eventually fails.
A bath is far more forgiving of a distant stack because its waste starts higher, which is why it is sometimes the only workable option where the stack sits on the wrong wall. Long or poorly detailed runs also risk siphoning the trap seal, showing up as sewer smell. In apartments the stack is usually shared and runs inside a shaft, a different order of intervention — expect VvE involvement. This one factor is why an identical-looking walk-in shower is simple in one home and a floor reconstruction in another.
What each choice does to the tiling
A point drain needs a compound fall from several directions, which rules out large-format tiles in the shower field. A linear drain gives a single-plane fall and keeps larger tiles viable.
A walk-in shower increases tiled area on every axis: one continuous floor plane, full-height shower walls, and a precise edge where tile meets drain, so plan cuts to land in corners. A bath removes floor area from the scope and often caps wall tiling at splash height, but brings its own detail: an access hatch to the trap, designed into the tile layout rather than cut in afterwards. Everything wall-fixed — glass brackets, grab bars, a wall-hung vanity, niches, valve position — must be backed before tiling, because retrofitting a fixing means breaking finished tiles.
Accessibility and resale
A level-entry shower is the accessible option by a wide margin: no rim to step over, room for a seat. A bath is the worst case for reduced mobility precisely because of the step-over. Grab bars need solid backing; plywood costs almost nothing while a stud wall is open. Future-proofing while the room is open is far cheaper than a second renovation.
On resale, match the decision to the likely buyer of that property type. A family house with one bathroom genuinely loses something if the only bath goes. In city apartments aimed at singles and couples, a walk-in shower reads as the modern choice. Execution quality matters more than the choice itself: a step up into a supposedly walk-in shower, standing water, or discoloured sealant damages the impression more than a missing bath.
What to ask a provider
Ask each one: how much floor depth did you measure, and where; how will the fall be formed; which waterproofing system, and will its corner and drain-flange detailing be followed; where does the waste tie into the stack, and is a pump proposed; are strip-out, disposal and making good in scope; and in an apartment, what VvE consent and working-hours limits apply.
