How to choose a photo studio: daylight, cyclorama and lighting

Photo studios look similar in a thumbnail, but the right one depends entirely on what you shoot. Before you book, judge a space on three things: the light, the backdrop system and the logistics.

Daylight or controlled light

Daylight studios with big windows flatter portraits, fashion and lifestyle work — check which way the windows face and whether blackout blinds exist for when you need full control. Product and catalogue work instead wants a windowless room where flash is the only light source.

Cyclorama and backdrops

A white cyclorama gives you a seamless, shadowless sweep for campaigns and video. If you shoot packshots, you need paper rolls, a shooting table and mounting arms instead. Confirm exactly what the studio provides versus what you bring.

Lighting and logistics

Ask whether flash or continuous light is in the rate or rented on top, and which modifiers come with it. If you arrive with a crew and cases, parking, a goods lift and easy loading save the whole shoot.
